Contemplative architecture

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (85) March, 2024

This study shows the attempts of stylistic architecture (in its historical understanding) to resist the second global style, Modern Movement, that arose at the end of the 19th century. However, all the postulates of the Modern Movement have already been implemented. However, the architecture of the second global style turned out to be uncompetitive in relation to Classicism. Therefore, the search for something new and attempts to return to style architecture are continuing. Such a return is theoretically impossible. The time has come to update the theoretical basis of architecture. We are witnessing the advent of phenomenological architecture—the architecture of the structure of consciousness and feelings. The main starting point for changing the theoretical basis of architecture is the emergence c of a “networked person” who seeks reconciliation with the outside world. The article proposes some provisions for the manifesto of contemplative architecture.

On contemporary architectural processes

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (83) September 2023

Architectural activity processes have been studied. In architectural practice, the place of the architect in the process of developing an architectural object has been reconsidered. The architect is looked at as an artist and space developer. The engineering and strategic part of the architectural project is now dealt with by other professionals. In architectural science, the basic principles of architectural theory are reviewed to fit the needs of today. There are indications of transition from the material or the abstract material to the phenomenological, sensual, transcendental. The attitude towards the environment is changing qualitatively: augmented reality allows both the old and the new to “exist” in the same territory (with the help of special tools). The attitude towards heritate conservation is also changing dramatically. The study of actual architectal activities in architectural practice and scientific activity has revealed a range of problems that are currently being addressed: development of new teaching aids for architectural education, and development of materials for practical use in building design and urban planning.

Architectural science: on ‘research specialism passports’

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (81) March, 2023

The paper presents a critique of the so-called ‘research specialism passports’ for architecture and shows inconsistencies associated with the inclusion of architecture in the category of engineering sciences. Architect training is essentially different from the training of engineers as the architectural educational programs include an extensive set of art disciplines. The proposal is to consider architecture as an interdisciplinary science. The purpose of this study is to revise the ‘research specialism passports’ in order to arrange them in accordance with the principle of division into fundamental and applied sciences.

THE MANHATTAN CODE: MANHATTAN PHANTOMS IN EKATERINBURG

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (69) March, 2020

A pilot study has been carried out at the Department of Theory of Architecture and Professional Communications, Ural State University of Architecture and Art, to check how the theory of Manhattanism is realized in the central area of the city of Ekaterinburg. Rem Koolhaas supposed that the theory of Manhattanism (as a foresight theory) would be gradually spreading as the principal megacity planning concept [3]. The work shows phases in the emergence of Manhattanism and the city planning stages in Ekaterinburg since its foundation. The study confirms that the theory of Manhattansim is starting to be realized in Ekaterinburg a century and a half after its conception.

FROM «URBAN HERITAGE PRESERVES» TO CONTROLLED DEVELOPMENT OF HISTORICAL URBAN ENVIRONMENTS

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (68) December, 2019

Numerous concepts and theories have been developed concerning the conservation of architectural historical heritage. Given the recognition that the concept of "view of the world» is changing, the scientific community is recognizing that the "view of values” concepts are also changing. This means the process of historical architectural heritage conservation itself is undergoing transformations. The issue of architectural heritage conservation should now be considered on various levels: whole world, country, region, city, borough, and neighborhood. Moreover, the issue of historical architectural heritage conservation should be consistent with the latest globalization concepts.

ON THE ROLE OF ARCHITECTURE AMONG ACADEMIC SCIENCES OF RUSSIA

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (49) March, 2015

The article discusses two key themes in contemporary theory of architecture. Qualitative changes in the lifestyles speed up changes in the views as to what contemporary architecture should be like. The other theme is related to the obsolescence of the Vitruvian triad "utility-strength-beauty". The author suggests broadening considerably the range of research specialisations in architecture.

MODELLING OF A SPACE OF COMPROMISE IN ARCHITECTURE AND TOWN-PLANNING

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (46) June, 2014

The article considers a development concept for the architectural environment of a deprived area as a "space of compromise» from the perspective of a systems approach to the structural planning of basic elements and relationships between central subspaces based on mathematical modelling of social, economic, technological and other processes and city environment objects. The authors identify hidden mechanisms underlying the emergence and evolution of such environmental systems through identification of systemic relations, factors, and constructions. Tendencies are noted towards organic embedding of architectural elements into the environment resulting in integration of natural and anthropogenous landscapes (similarity of forms in architecture and design to natural forms).

ARCHITECTURAL ANALYSIS OF PLANNING SOLUTIONS FOR THE FIRST URAL FACTORY HOSPITALS

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (44) December, 2013

The article reviews Ural factory hospitals from various periods and styles: Nizhni-Tagil hospital (Demidov hospital), Zlatoust factory hospital and Satka factory hospital. Comparative analysis covers the plans and front elevations, and layout features, and identifies non-communicating chains of sanitary premises and wards for infectious patients. Differences in the layout and mix of premises enable tracking the evolution of the hospital lay-out and assessing the effects of changes on the planning structure of the buildings as a whole.

THE SINERGETIC APPROACH TO ARCHITECTURAL ACTIVITY

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (42) June, 2013

The modelling of complex developing systems of a natural, technical and social character (for example, city space) in the modern-day context is determined based on the principles of synergetics. It is therefore important to clearly understand the methodological foundations and technologies of such modelling. Synergetics describes the mechanism of self-organisation of complex systems in the condition of their instability. This makes it essential to define the factors and conditions that identify transients (including in architectural and town-planning formations): bifurcation points and possible fluctuations, probable scenarios of development, and cascade rhythm parameters that determine the pace characteristics. Also, noteworthy is the potential of information (computer) support for research, analysis and modelling of complex systems.

FUNDAMENTAL ARCHITECTURAL SCIENCE: TODAY AND TOMORROW

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (40) December, 2012

Involving synergetics has enabled the architectural science to understand and explain a lot of processes that are taking place in the modern architectural world. The author makes a contribution to the debate that has broken out with regard to synergetics and, in particular, the theory of rhythm-cascades, between representatives of humanities and natural sciences. The author argues that the solution to theoretical and practical issues in architecture depends on close interaction between fundamental architectural science and other natural sciences. The solution to key problems connected with the creation of a man-made artificial living environment for the 21st century may be achieved by distinguishing between fundamental and applied architectural science. Theoreticians should investigate promising ways of human living rather than serving the applied science. Only by getting essentially abstracted from current problems of architecture would theoreticians be able to get immersed into the sphere of general science and outline prospects for the development of the living environment

METHODOLOGY OF SYSTEMS ANALYSIS IN ARCHITECTURE

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (34) June, 2011

System concepts and ideas derived and used in various spheres/areas of research (social, economic, technological, information, etc.) are the result of identification of characteristics/principles that are common to various sorts/types of complex systems. These concepts include ideas of self-organisiation and evolution, wholeness, hierarchical organisation (with levels of analysis) based on the notions of system (elements, links), structure (morphology, order), subsystem (components, units of system hierarchy), environment (the dichotomy «system-systemic environment»), process invariants (period of life, transition unit, temporal state), classification of basic properties and processes in systems (functional properties and relationships, development and functioning processes).

Advanced architectural modelling based on system concepts is taking advantage of information technologies/computers. These enable effective realisation of sophisticated recursive procedures in the design of architectural projects and town planning systems possessing many of the fractal properties.

An urban environment as a whole, considered as a continuous structure in space with a complex morphology, functioning in time, unfolds in the context of global processes (both natural and anthropogenic), influencing all aspects of human life and covering all areas of society’s activities. At the same time, functional development occurs in interrelation with the changing spatial organisation of the city (as an interrelated and integrated system).

PROGRAMS OF FORM SELF-ORGANIZATION LOGIC AND FORM MUTATIONS

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (33) March, 2011

Contemporary research in various fields of science is in need of better ways for representing objects and processes without any unreasonable simplification of their structure whilst making provisions for the ignoring of certain properties (probably, essential) of processes and phenomena investigated. Modern-day architecture – from objects and fragments to complete city spaces - is a complex system underpinned by synergy principles, which should not be ignored when developing an urban environment and designing new objects in it. An awareness of synergy principles influences the architectonic representation of an urban environment, which allows town-planning concepts to be developed taking into account new materials, technologies and opportunities.

CONCEPTS OF MODERN THEORY OF ARCHITECTURE

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (31) September, 2010

The article considers two key themes of scientific debate concerning modern theory of architecture. The first theme is the place of architectural science in the general scientific context. Attention is focused on the interdisciplinary character of architectural science. The second theme is global styles in architecture. The basis for the formation of a third global style after classicism and modern movement is shown.

ТЕОРИЯ ВОСПРИЯТИЯ: СЕНСОРНЫЕ КАЧЕСТВА СРЕДЫ

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (20) December, 2007
